One quick note: Comments on the story of the women caught in adultery always seem to pass over something important. The woman was indeed caught in adultery, but the law (Leviticus 20:10) said that both man and women must be stoned to death. Those in crowd knew who the man was because they caught them in adultery but they only brought forth the woman.
Further, the one who caught them was in fact the one who should throw the first stone.
They were guilty of breaking an equally serious commandment: bearing false witness. They were also acting unjustly which is an abomination to God. Hence, Jesus confronts them in their sin and leaves them walking away one by one. They were convicted by their own words.
It continues a theme of Jesus which you excellently pointed out. When you are focused on the sins of others, you do not see your own sin. When you choose not to look at your own sin, you focus on the sins of others.
