I Write Daily. Publish? Eh Not So Much
Many writers write every day but that does not mean we publish daily. I am no different.

Writing is in my blood. I discovered my enjoyment of it in the sixth grade, fifty years ago.
I tend to like to edit my stories over and over again. While some will write a story, do a little editing and publish, I will edit my story dozens of times before I finally publish.Editing and revising over and over again are a part of writing. I also have a degree in philosophy so I root my writing style in my desire to use the exact word for the exact meaning. This again means revising and changing to the point I get it where I want it.
I describe writing as using words to communicate like a sculptor uses a hammer and chisel to bring forth an image. I take the first draft and then change a little here, alter a word choice there, move a sentence from there to here, on and on until it the final result is my imagined goal.
Many writers advise no piece is going to be perfect before you publish and I agree. None of mine are — I am sure you noticed. However, they are a long way off from where I was on my second draft usually.
This means I may write something and rewrite enough times that although I wrote it on Monday, I did not publish it until Thursday or even do not publish for weeks or even never. Hence why I write every day, but I did not publish daily. This is on top of other material that I write that does not appear on Medium. I edit a newsletter, I create homilies and I produce a radio show. So, I do a lot of creating but my writing to publishing ratio is lower than 1 to 1.
You may notice that nothing I write goes viral, I guess I do not have the eye for what interests people on Medium. This is partially because my niche is Catholic pieces which are not big sellers here. However, as I wrote elsewhere, I do not write on Medium for money, but for other reasons including claps. The reason is when someone claps that means they got something out of what I wrote. That makes it all worth it to me.
I do write something every day. It may be from my research, it may be for the newsletter or it may be for the my online publication on Medium. It does not matter. I write, I like to write.
Sometimes, and I know that all writers do this, I may write something and discover that I cannot use it at this time. I let it stay as a draft and then a while later: days, weeks, months, I go back to see if I can change it and make it more relevant for the day.
I have a piece sitting in my drafts folder right now on the anti-virus protests. The point is on how to address your disagreement with the lockdown while not undermining your message by endangering others or giving your opponents ammunition against your message. I found that at the time it was not best to publish that piece because it did not seem the protests would continue long term. Now, months later and after a total breakdown in some parts of society, I am not sure that the piece would work.
I also need to get more of my ideas on paper. Remember, like many others here on Medium, writing is not my first job. So, I cannot always begin to put together an article based on an idea soon after it comes. I need to prioritize that writing to when I can best do it.
All that aside, I do write every day and enjoy it greatly. Publish every day?
Eh, not so much.
